What were we doing on 31st Dec 2019? Just think once...
Written by: Maria Ghias
I still remember the night of 31st December, when I particularly and the world in general was celebrating the new year saying goodbye to the good and bad that 2019 entailed. Some were planning their wedding in the upcoming year, some were seeing themselves flying graduation caps, some were expecting promotions while some were planning to visit home after a long time. There was a pile of hopes and expectations attached to this new year. Not knowing what catastrophe lay ahead in the upcoming year...
A year which will put you in doubt; will I graduate this year? Will I meet my parents again? And most importantly will I make it? A year which will test the theory of evolution where nature selects the best adapted individuals to survive and reproduce in the battle of 'survival of the fittest'. Something that future generations will read in history books that despite all development and technology we became helpless! Helpless to a microorganism in the macro scheme of things...
History will write that the most powerful nations who once showed their power by bombing on Palestine and issuing unlimited days lock down in Kashmir are now preparing for their own country's lock down, for what reason? To survive. This is neither a war of technology or power, nor the start of world war III but the world has stopped....the most developed countries are now seeking help from the skies.
What do you think is the reason behind this? In my opinion, it's a reminder to the world that the technology that we developed is nothing in front of God. These vacations are given to isolate ourselves and to reflect about what we are doing in this world, why do we want to win the race of this materialistic world? Why are we making this world a toxic place for others? Why are we stealing freedom from the people of Kashmir? Why are we afraid to talk about the people of Palestine? This is the time to think about things we don't bother to think about because we are busy working day and night to just develop these technologies!
God has given us one more chance to think about all the unfair things we were doing for decades and decades; ignoring injustice in society which we are equally responsible for. The untold truth is, if we go back a few months when life was on track, I saw people carrying the weight of anxiety and depression just to make sure that they are going with the right speed at which the world is functioning. I see the world as a jungle of overpopulated machines working day and night with no emotions, we are left with no time to think about what we are even doing or why we are doing it. No time to distinguish between right and wrong, and the value we are creating in the world. We secretly wished for time to halt just once so that we can catch our breath in this rat race, deep down inside we were all tired and guess what God listened..
While I am thinking about when the world will restart Insha Allah (if God wills), what changes are we going to see? Are we going to remain ignorant people who stepped into their houses with the fear of death? Or this is going to be a new world order where nations and people live in harmony rather than foster conflict? And the most important question: Will Syria still be bombarded? Will Kashmir still have to fight for its basic human rights? Will we still choose to remain silent spectators? Or will we be the kind that nature selected to live up to its expectations? Just think once...
